Isn’t is crazy how a comment made, perhaps many years ago, can stick with you and define how you perceive yourself and the world around you?
I once heard it said that a person can be “so heavenly-minded they are no earthly good.” For years that voice, that quote, has been echoing in my head—and my response has been to try to stay “grounded,” “real,” not “holier than thou” or judgmental or “overly spiritual.” I’ve wanted to appear “normal.” Not like a super-spiritual freak, etc.
And while certainly I do believe God doesn’t want us to be prideful, unavailable or unreachable (which may be what that person meant when they said it), I also now wholeheartedly believe that if I’m not completely focused on God, if I’m not allowing ample time for God to fill me each day, if I don’t take the opportunity to listen to His promptings in every small moment of life… if I neglect these things—and am not “heavenly-minded” in that sense—I am “no earthly good.”
Perhaps I am weaker than most, more desperate than most, but all I know is that if I try to give give give and do do do—especially without first “filling up” on God, I will be exhausted, only giving from myself, from my own limited knowledge and resources… and therefore it won’t be all that great anyway. Yet if I take the time to receive receive receive from the Holy God of the Universe, the Creator of all good things, the Capable Hero of all incredible stories— if I let Him fill me and give me whatever treasures He chooses to give me each and every day, then I will be of some use the world. Not only will I feel full and overflowing, I’ll also be able to not walk away so exhausted and dry, feeling like I’ve given away my own self in the process.
Am I “so heavenly-minded I’m no earthly good”? On the contrary: I believe the more “heavenly-minded” I am, the more useful I am to the world.
