He *Delights* in Me
Last Saturday I wrote about the importance of taking time to slow down and take a deep breath, inhaling the truth and the strength and the wisdom God wants to infuse in us as a way of equipping us for our lives.
My focus last week was on Psalm 18:19 and how God rescued me from the frantic busyness of my life and graciously relocated me to “a spacious place.” This week, as I was on a walk on a country road, meditating on that same Psalm, He spoke to my heart about another aspect of that verse that is so beautiful. And that is this:
He delights in me.
“Delight: To give great pleasure, satisfaction, or enjoyment to; to please highly,” explains the dictionary.
And that is God’s motivation with me. That is His motivation when He’s moving the chess pieces around in my life. That is His motivation when He denies or delays any of my requests, or answers them in completely unexpected, perhaps even hard-to-recognize, ways. That is His motivation when He speaks to me. And when He puts certain especially awesome friends in my life. And when He paints a particularly beautiful sunset for me to see. And when He gives me the courage to have a difficult conversation with a loved one.
And even when He allows me to walk through a hardship that I would never ever choose.
The God of the universe takes pleasure in me. He enjoys and is satisfied by me. He is with me. He is for me. And He wants me to truly and deeply know how much He adores me.
And it has always been this way. His love for me has always been the driving force for how He works in my life.
“I have loved you with an everlasting love,” He declares in Jeremiah 31:3. “I have drawn you with unfailing kindness,” He says.
From everlasting to everlasting, this is how He has looked at me and at all the rest of His creation. “It is very good,” He said upon completion of every living thing at the dawn of creation (Genesis 1:31).
And whenever I start to doubt myself or doubt my worth or doubt His purposes in my life, I can take a deep breath and let Him remind me of the truth:
- I am treasured by Him. (Deuteronomy 7:6)
- He has good plans for me. (Jeremiah 29:11)
- I can call to Him and wholeheartedly trust and expect that He will respond. (Psalm 18:3)
- He listens to my cries and cares enough to respond. (Psalm 18:6, 16-19)
- I can stand in firm confidence that He has loved me and taken pleasure in me even as He was knitting me together in my mother’s womb. (Psalm 139:14)
- He has always been kind and will continue to be so. (Jeremiah 31:3, Hebrews 13:8)
He delights in me.
And I want to remind you today: He delights in you, too.
