Our Litmus Test for Truth

litmus test

This morning I walked a group of women through the “Finding Freedom” workshop at a women’s conference.  We journeyed through the method (and many of the stories) I wrote about this past summer during the 5-part “Finding Freedom” series.

When we got to the step (in our workshop) wherein we Tuned Into What God Has to Say about all the messages we heard in our minds, I handed them a 4-page handout listing several of the verses God has used to speak His truth to me over the past several years.

It is so important to focus on the truth and to discard anything else with the trash.

God speaks to us in all kinds of ways.  He speaks to us through Bible verses and Bible stories, words & phrases that come to our minds, art (painting, drawing, doodling, calligraphy, lettering), songs, visions, mentors, friends, sermons, books, podcasts… and tons of other ways.

But our litmus test must always be God’s Word.

Regardless of what we think or feel about any particular message that comes to our minds, this is what we must ask ourselves: Does what I hear/feel/see/desire/think line up with what God says in His Word?

With that in mind, I wanted to pass along to you the list of truths I passed along to my ladies this morning.  It is just a simple list of some of the verses God has used to speak to me during my own personal times of seeking Him.  I pray you are encouraged and find a new level of freedom as you cling to all God reveals in the following verses:

~Psalm 69:33~ “The Lord hears the needy and does not despise his captive people.”

~Jeremiah 31:25~ “I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint.”

~Romans 8:38-39~ “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

~Romans 8:26~ “The Spirit helps us in our weakness.  We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”

~1 Thessalonians 1:4~ “For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you.”

~John 8:44~ “He [the devil] was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him.  When he lies, he speaks what is natural to him, for he is a liar and the father of lies and half-truths.”

*This is an addendum to the Finding Freedom series I wrote this past summer.   May God use these verses to heal you, to encourage you, to whisper hope to you, and to free you from whatever has previously bound you.
